Files on External/Flash Drive Changed to Shortcuts Virus

AUGUST 11, 2010
Issue
I caught a virus on my flash drive at work and it appears to have changed all my file names to short cuts. I believe I’ve cleaned the virus but how do i get my files back so that I can view them?
Solution
* If you did not format your flash drive, then check whether the files are not in hidden mode.
* Click on “Start” –>Run–>type cmd and click on OK.
* Check your external Drive letter in My Computer
* Here I assume your external drive as G:
* Enter this command.
attrib -h -r -s /s /d g:*.*
* Delete the unnecessary shortcuts.
Note: Replace the letter g with your flash drive letter.

monitor problem

My monitor keeps blinking on and off everytime I turn on my computer. Someone suggested that it could be the computer, but I hooked up my friend's monitor to my computer and it works fine. When I have my monitor plugged in to an outlet, it continues to blink on and off (the light turning from green to blank to green again). This monitor is still fairly new, only about 2 years old. Is there a way I can fix this on my own? I really don't want to get a new monitor or pay someone to fix it, as I am a student without much money.

The same thing happens to me... all the time. That's how I found this page. It will blink on and off (about a second off, and half a second back on, then repeats) usually when I start my computer. I know for a fact that my computer isn't to blame.
I figured out that if you left it sitting for some time, it DOESN'T work. What does work is unplugging the power cord that is hooked to the back of the monitor, then plugging it back in, after blowing in it to get the dust out. Try that a couple of times, and it may work. I've shopped around, but I've found no sign of an inverter board, if that is the problem.
Ever so often, about an hour or two into a login session, it will start back again and it's a pain in the back to get the monitor working again. I've not a clue what to do besides buy a new monitor.

Making a Free Website

Making a free Website is possible! In fact many of the tutorials and articles on this site use free resources, available on the web, like the Trellian WebPage editor.
There are many components involved in making a website free or otherwise, and here we will look at these components in turn, and particularly at the problems that may arise when using free website making components and tools.
You should only consider the free approach for personal sites.  I do not recommend the free approach for business websites.

Components Required

There are 3 main ingredients or components required:
  • Free Website Domain Name
  • Free Website hosting
  • Free Website building tools

Website Domain Name

Every website requires a domain name. If you want a free domain name then you are limited to a domain name provided by your ISP (Internet service Provider) or your hosting provider.
In either case your domain name will have a form similar to thiswww.isp.com/yourname,  or www.yourname.isp.com. Because of this free domain names are unsuitable for a business and should only be used for personal websites.
Domain names aren't expensive and if you want an almost free website then consider purchasing your own domain name. Low cost domain names are available from many sources but remember that it is usually better to choose the same hosting provider for both web hosting and the domain name.
If you are thinking of making several websites then remember that it is possible to use a single host/ hosting package to host multiple domain names which will drastically reduce your hosting costs.
In effect you pay for the first site and additional sites are free.

Website Hosting

There a many free web hosting providers available on the Internet. The two main sources of free Website hosting are ISP web space and free hosting providers like:
For Sites that are content only (99.9% of all websites) then a website blog is probably the best choice for good quality free site without advertising.

Beware Free Hosts!

Some free hosting providers require that you transfer your domain name (if you have one ) to them. You should be very wary of this as it could potentially prove expensive. Always check the conditions before signing up.
Business websites should never use a free host!

The Blogging Option

Although I'm not a great fan of most free site providers as most tend to be short lived. There are two big free blog providers blogger.com and Wordpress.com.
They are an ideal solution for personal websites and for anyone looking to gain a little experience building websites. You can find more detail in the blogging section.

Website Making tools

Online Website Making/Building Tools

It has become popular to offer on-line Web page building tools where you use your web Browser to Make Web Pages and indeed the entire site. This facility is not usually available for free Websites and so is not discussed here.

Offline Website making/Building Tools

A Website can be made using very simple text editing tools like notepad. However the simpler the tool you use then the more knowledge you need. There are many freeweb Page and HTML editors to choose from which are more than adequate for starting your website.
