Abstract:-

“GREEN IT” is one segment of larger green tech or clean tech industry, it is really inventive strategy helping your organization to go green and minimize its environmental impact. Also called green computing it describes the study and the using of computer resources in an efficient way. Green IT starts with manufacturers producing environmentally friendly products and encouraging IT departments to consider more friendly options like virtualization, power management and proper recycling habits. The government has also recently proposed new compliance regulations which would work towards certifying data centers as green. Some criteria include using low-emission building materials, recycling, using alternative energy technologies, and other green technologies. The computer industry impacts the environment during the manufacturing, delivery, operation and end-of-life of its devices. At the same time, IT can help other parts of your organization to become more environmentally friendly, in the areas of transport, energy and more. Both paths lead to the same objective – a clear understanding of how IT and the use of IT can reduce your organization’s environmental impact while also bringing commercial benefits. This paper talks about the “never before seen” eco-inspired computer which is free from PVC (Polyvinyl chloride) Plastic material or other toxic chemical.

Keywords: - Green it, green computing, eco-friendly computers, Poly vinyl chloride, toxic chemical.

Introduction:-

Green IT refers to the study and practice of using computers and IT resources in a more efficient and environmentally responsible way. Computers and computing eat up a lot of natural resources, from the raw materials needed to manufacture them, the power used to run them, and the problems of disposing them at end of life.

Concerns have recently grown over the use of hazardous chemicals in the manufacture of consumer goods, including the rapidly growing sector of electrical and electronic equipment. Some products, including computers, can contain heavy metals and other hazardous chemicals. The ongoing manufacture of electrical/electronic equipment incorporating such chemicals has the potential to impact on the environment and human health as a result of the manufacture, use and disposal of these Products.

Computers are made of poisonous materials like lead, chromium, cadmium and mercury. If computers are buried in landfill, they can leach harmful chemicals into waterways and the environment and if burned release toxic contaminants into the air we breathe. Computers consume energy and no-one has come up with a practical solution for the potential environmental disaster of millions of obsolete computers hitting landfill sites around the world.

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is unique in its high chlorine and additives content, which makes it an environmental poison throughout its life cycle.poly Vinyl chloride is a known human carcinogen. PVC releases toxic and other persistent organic pollutants during its manufacture and disposal and cannot be readily recycled due to it chlorine and additive content. Furthermore, additives are not bound to the plastic and leach out. The data found that the amount of hazardous materials contained in a typical PC is very small.

PVC is the most environmentally damaging plastic. However, this PVC is used in all PCs. Despite allegations that PVC is widely found in waste PCs, the data suggests that PVC is not a major PC plastic. Brominates flame retardants (BFRs) and Polyvinyl chloride PVC have traditionally been widely used in electronic products this means they stay in the environment for a long time and accumulate in animals and humans. Many brominates flame retardants are also toxic. PVC contaminates humans and the environment throughout its lifecycle during its production, use and disposal. While all plastics pose serious threats to human health and the environment, few consumers realize that PVC is the single most environmentally damaging of all plastics. Since safer alternatives are available for virtually all uses of PVC, it is possible to protect human health and the environment by replacing and eventually phasing out this poison plastic.

IT Companies which are using BFR and PVC in their product

What this paper talks about:-

Eco-Friendly bamboo Computers

ü In 2009 Dell introduced bamboo-cased mini pc has a eco friendly product.

ü In 2010 Asus has launched the eco-friendly Bamboo Series Notebook in India.

ü Bamboo computer will use less energy.

ü Recycled casing.

ü The energy efficient machine will be made from recycled and recyclable materials where possible.

ü PC World will also pay for tree planting and other conservation projects to offset the impact of carbon emissions generated during manufacturing.

ü Designing green products includes considering the environmental impact of the materials used to make them. From the glass, plastic, and metal in our products to the paper and ink in our packaging, our goal is to continue leading the industry in reducing or eliminating environmentally harmful substances.

ü The greatest environmental challenge facing our industry today is the presence of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) in products. In keeping with our philosophy over the last decade, Apple is not waiting for legislation to ban these substances. Not only is every Mac, iPod, and phone free of PVC and BFRs, we are also qualifying thousands of components to be free of elemental bromine and chlorine, putting us years ahead of anyone in the industry.

Conclusions:-

Even today every computer is made of Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and brominates flame retardants (BFRs) plastic, which is harmful to the environment and humans. So many companies are came forward to solve this problem one of the solution is bamboo pc which reduces pollution in the environment and many other problem caused by today computers. Our paper talks about today computers should be replaced with eco-friendly computers.
